One of our customers contacted Northwest Airlines to find out about checking skis as baggage. The issue is whether they are oversized as they exceeded the length allowance of 62". This was the reply she received:
"Thank you for contacting NWA Luggage Service Online. In your letter, you requested information regarding carrying on and/or checking ski equipment water-skis or snowboards. Allow me to provide you with the guidelines Northwest Airlines uses for these special items. Snow skis: NWA/KLM will accept one ski bag and one ski boot bag containing skis, poles, bindings, and boots as checked luggage, and we will count the two items as one piece of checked luggage. The ski/boot bag may contain more than one pair of skis/boots. Northwest policy has always been to exempt skis from size requirements, but if the weight allowance is exceeded, fees will apply. Additional ski/boot bags will be subject to normal excess charges. One ski/water-ski or snowboard can be accepted as one piece of checked luggage, and a liability release form must be signed at the airport. Plastic ski covers are available at NWA ticket counters on a first served basis-subject to availability. Also, some of the more recognizable ski destination cities have a cardboard box available for purchase ($10.00) again, first come first served."
We have checked with several airlines and get a similar statement. Some do not allow the boot bag to be included as one piece. However, airlines change their regulations and all airlines are not the same. In fact, some airlines are not the same from clerk to clerk. We suggest you check with your airline to ensure that you will not be subject to large extra charges. If you wish to provide feedback use our Contact Us page, we will be glad to add it to the site to help others. Also note, airlines have to have access to any bag. Locking your bag may cause the lock to be broken open if they decide to search it.Return to Products
